Event Description

American Pakistani Public Affairs Committee hosted a fundraising event in support of Councilwoman Debi Rose for New-York City Council on August 10th, 2017 in Staten Island to help its constituent target groups’ voices heard and partnering with local politicians and stakeholders.

The event was a success with the aimed target funds raised for the candidate. During the event the APPAC platform and goals were also introduced to Staten Island Community leaders and numerous attendees of the event were accepted into the APPAC membership. APPAC would like to thank all who attended the event and showed their support!

Debi Rose is a second-generation Staten Island native and the first African American from Staten Island elected to the New York City Council. She has made economic development, education, public health and public safety among her priorities since she won the race for the 49th Council District seat in 2009. Subsequent to her re-election in November 2013, Councilwoman Rose was appointed Deputy Majority Leader for the City Council and Chair of its Waterfronts Committee. In addition, she sits on the Aging, Education, Land Use, Rules, Privileges, & Elections, and Transportation committees, as well as the council’s Budget Negotiating Team.

APPAC sincerely believes that civic engagement, responding to local politics with active participation and contribution of ideas, action and support are vital to the longevity of our nation. It is our common responsibility to improve our understanding of the local infrastructures that make our democracy work. French political scientist and historian Alexis de Tocqueville believed America’s highly unique government worked because its citizens were active in the political sphere. They voted and attended town meetings, involved themselves in private associations, and went to church. But all these things have faded in popularity as our news and politics have become more centralized. Many of us don’t take the time to talk to our neighbors, let alone go to a town hall meeting. And when no one shows concern for the local sphere, it’s easy to feel unimportant and helpless, which results either in apathy or bitter anger — both of which we’re seeing in this election cycle.

You can start increasing your civic engagement and contribute your voice, actions and support to the causes that you care most by supporting Councilwoman Debi Rose and becoming a member of the APPAC.
